Missionary Care Action Sheet
The question becomes, “What can and should we do in the area of missionary care?”
1. Educate yourself about the subject of missionary care. Mind the Gaps- Engaging the Church in Missionary Care (www.MindtheGaps.org) Bulk Discounts are Available Tender Care- providing pastoral care for God’s global servants (www.Barnabas.org) Bulk Discounts Are Available. These are two excellent books on missionary care. They are written from a broad perspective of church size, sending church vs. supporting church, etc. However, they would be invaluable to a church that wants to go to the “next level” at understanding and being involved in missionary care.
2. Determine the irreducible minimum amount of missionary care that a church feels should be provided to missionaries. For example: a. Regular, non-administrative “tune ups”. b. Regular, non-administrative field visits. c. Proper physical and psychological evaluation before acceptance as a candidate and on each furlough. d. Requiring sending pastor, assistant pastor, or whomever to attend candidate school with a missionary.
3. Learn, in an educational, non-accusatory way the approach to missionary care of the mission boards with whom the church supports missionaries. The perspective of the board and the missionary are needed.
4. Include as a requirement for an approved mission board what the church determines is the irreducible minimum missionary care and whose responsibility those elements are.
5. Require and assist missionaries in participating in a professional missionary debriefing when they return to the US for furlough. This is a debriefing done by an outside person/agency for the missionaries personal benefit.
